ELEMENTAL BODIES

Hybrid beings emerge from rock and landscape: faces carved from strata, bodies dissolving into mountains and rivers. Inspired by the uncanny boulders of Hampi, India, the works imagine humans as elemental - not passengers on this planet, but children of it, continuous with earth, water, air, and fire.

The series sits in a lineage from Arcimboldo’s composite portraits to the Surrealists; Dalí, Ithell Colquhoun.

Alongside this cosmological enquiry, I experimented with perception. For one painting, I made two near-identical versions with subtle shifts in perspective, designed for a View-Master toy. When the slides were viewed together, a stereoscopic effect emerged: an imagined space conjured in 3D, handmade rather than photographed.
