LIFE IN PAINT AND LINE
This body of work brings together paintings and drawings in oil, pastel, watercolour and graphite, made from life. Working with models, I am less concerned with likeness than with presence that emerges through mark-making. Wobbly contours, skewed proportions and emphatic exaggerations transform sitters into something wilder, stranger, and more alive than a simple likeness.
Rooted in the tradition of Soutine, Matisse, Schiele, and Picasso, who mined the tension between observation and invention to make figures that are at once recognisable and radically reimagined.
